Even though arches were used by earlier civilisations such as the Etruscans, the Romans improved the architectural feature by building it out of a special concrete. This ensured that the Romans’ arches were enduring, extensive, high and light.
The two piers hold up the arch and they are each covered by an impost which is a platform. The small, curved arch on the imposts is made up of voussoirs which are brick or stone blocks. The arch is then completed by the middle block in it (keystone).

The Colosseum is the Ancient Romans’ most successful and
greatest architectural work by them. It is a Roman creation, and the
exterior parts of the amphitheatre are still standing today in Italy.
This is because of the way it was constructed. Arches which are continuously in the building’s structure assist in the balance, lightness and ventilation of the Colosseum. Thus, allowing it to still be seen today - giving it that stability and strength to endure for centuries. The arches in the Colosseum are a great way to see both the support they create and how when incorporated into buildings and structures they can form such an impressive, aesthetic design.
